Games Night Event at TOG

Tog will be hosting a series of short talks about games. Topics will include:

Introduction to game design
Process of game creation
Building interactive games
Coding games (tutorials)
New games on the market, hot Kickstarters
Use of games in education

This will be followed by a night of gaming (we will have Board Games, Mame & Xbox consoles, bring your laptop if you wish). There will be couple free to enter competitions run throughout the night.

Talks will start at 7pm on Friday 30th of September. Please arrive at 6.30pm.

Any speakers who are interested in giving a talk please contact us at info@tog.ie or speak to Izzy or Diarmaid in the space.

Each speaker will have 5 to 15 minutes available, although when necessary longer time slots can be assigned.

A bunch of us headed to an event last weekend called Electromagnetic Field in the UK. EMF is a 3 day camping festival held every two years with over a thousand people attending. The weekend is filled with talks, workshops and lots of crazy art installations. We teamed up with other hackers from Ireland to form our own little village to have a place to call home for the weekend. Our members kept themselves busy over the weekend by adding to the lineup with their own talks and workshops check out below.

EMF had a full program of events to keep all the kids entertained. We ran our bridge building competition with the young hackers of EMF. Congratulations to the hope bridge on their win.

Inspirefest 2016 – Family Fringe

Inspirefest is a two day technology conference taking place on 30th-1st of July in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. The conference has a strong focus on STEM and diversity. To go along with the conference, there is a host of fringe events taking place in Merrion Square. We are proud to be taking part in the Family Fringe event on 2nd of July.

The Family Fringe brings together the leading Irish STEAM community groups in Ireland: CoderDojo, Girls Hack Ireland, GameCraft, TOG, Hardie Kids, Coding Grace, TCD Walton Club, Physics Buskers and Dublin Maker who will be offering a whole range of activities. From coding and hardware hacking workshops to interactive exhibitions and games, there will be an abundance of activities for small kids (7+) and big kids too! We will be showcasing a range of projects along with running a drop in bridge building competition.

OSM MapJam Saturday 18th of June

OpenStreetMap (OSM) Ireland members will meet Saturday 18th of June in Dublin and do OSM mappy stuff on laptops in TOG. Like an indoor mapping party / hack day / social meet up / barcamp.

What is OpenStreetMap?
OpenStreetMap is a world wide, open content map. It’s often referred to as the Wikipedia of maps in reference to the fact that it is open to be edited by anyone.

If you’d like to learn more about OpenStreetMap, come along! Want to start mapping your local area, and want help? Come along! Want to find out how to use the low level OpenStreetMap data? Come along! This event is open to all.
If you’re already an OSM mapper and would like come, but not sure what to do, don’t worry we have loads of townlands to map and plenty of people who will give you a hand learning the details.

We will also be discussion the recent permission obtained from the Gardai to use Mobile Speed Camera locations on openstreetmaps and on apps that use that data.

In addition there will also be a meeting of the Irish Open Source Geospatial Foundation. OSGeo was created to support the collaborative development of open source geospatial software, and promote its widespread use.

Line Following Robots

We recently ran a Electronic “Build-It” Workshop. We have twelve build a line following robot. The little robot was an all analog device, not an arduino insight. Check out the photos from the workshop in our gallery and the video below of them inaction.

Boat Building Competition

This event has been canceled.

We are hosting the first ever Tog Boat Building Competition on June 4th. In the past we have build bridges but it is now time to take to the water or in this case a home made tank.

IMG_20160318_211944 Participants will create boats and run a time trial in our homemade tank . Each boat will have to be smaller than 10 cm by 10 cm. There will be a fan at one end to provide wind to your sails. Apart from a size restriction, the only other condition is no batteries. A special prize will be up for grabs to the boat with the fastest time.

Workshop

Before the competition will are opening up our workshop to all you novice or last minute boat builders. We will have all sorts of building materials on hand for you to get creative and build a fine boat. This workshop is optional and is not required for taking part in the competition.

Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian.
