Starting this Thursday we’re bringing coding nights back to Tog!

For our first night its going to be a casual affair, with no speakers or projects or prescribed idea of what we’re going to do. It will be much like the lock picking and crafting nights, with a meet-up of people interested in programming as a general topic.

If you are knowledgable in a particular framework or language, it’d be great if you could come along and lend a hand if somebody has any questions.

There is no language favouritism, there’ll be people attending with Python, Objective-C, Java, Javascript, C#, C++, UnityScript (Unity3D), and many other tools and languages.

I will personally be working on a mobile app for Tog for both iOS (Objective-C) and Android (Java), but you can come along with whatever project you have in mind, or none at all.

We’ll be using the first few nights to figure out how people want these nights to be, whether they should be project based, or remain very much a casual affair. So please come along if you have some ideas, or just to chill out with fellow would-be and expert coders.

Crochet for not-quite beginners – Sat 17th August

So you started to crochet, but never quite got further than a square that turned into a triangle? This is the class for you. We’ll look at some further techniques, such as crochet in the round starting with a magic circle and stitches for decreasing.  During the class you’ll get a reminder of the basics, and then we’ll make a sphere, which combines increases with decreases and is a great starting point for making hats or amigurumi toys.

Giant Granny Square
We’ll be moving on from here

Dublin Mini Maker Faire: post-faire BBQ

Dublin Mini Maker Faire logoMaking and showing off can be such hard work, that’s why Tog are helping out the makers of Dublin Mini Maker Faire by hosting a wind down barbeque on the day after.  Last year’s BBQ was a great success, and with more makers at this year’s faire, it can only be better!

The BBQ will be hosted in Tog on Sunday the 28th of July from 2pm. Weather permitting we’ll be sitting in the yard, enjoying the smell of burning coals, otherwise we can huddle indoors and enjoy ourselves. Food will be provided, but you’ll have to bring your own beer (this way you can pick your favourite beer!).  Makers who were involved in the Faire will get free-in with their badges.  If you’re not a Maker, don’t fret, you can still join us for the reasonable sum of €5.

bbqIf you’re not a member, it’d be great if you can RSVP in the comments or by email, so we can plan for you.  We don’t want anyone to be left short of food!

Plenty of food for those who come, let us know in comments below.

Open Wrt Workshop

openwrt-logo

OpenWrt is firmware or software that runs on wireless access points such as those used to provide Wifi to home internet users. Using OpenWrt can increase speed, improve reliability and add extra features. There will be a free Workshop held at TOG on Sunday 16th of December at 3pm. No need to book, just turn up. If possible, but not essential, bring your home router with you.

http://openwrt.org
OpenWrt is an alternative and open source firmware for wireless/ADSL routers.

Quote from there web page:
“Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developer, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.”

Irish Hackerspaces Week 2012

Irish Hackerspace Week 2012 Logo
Irish Hackerspace Week 2012

This year Irish Hackerspaces Week falls between September 15th – 23rd. This gives hackerspaces around Ireland a chance to expand their reach in to the local community.

TOG has already started to get events ready for this week. Sept 15th and 16th is the Synchronous Hackathon weekend which is a great weekend to get people aware of that can happen in a hackerspace. Our usual Open Social is on the 15th to kick off the whole weekend. We also have a yearly quiz on the last weekend ( Saturday 22nd ), and get all the hackerspaces together via audio/video link with questions dished out by our very own TOG Quiz Master.

Apart from those weekend activities, during the week we are planning electronics and craft activities, a night of short talks on various topics and a Gastro Night, discussing food science and beer brewing 🙂

As the calendar for this week comes together we will be posting a schedule for all to see.

Watch this space.
