TOG Hackerspace Turns 15: A Decade and a Half of Community

Celebrate a decade and a half of community at TOG Hackerspace as we mark our 15th birthday on Saturday, January 27th, at 7 pm. From humble beginnings in a hotel gathering, TOG has blossomed into a thriving community in Dublin, now comfortably settled in Motor City behind Mr Price on Kylemore Road.

Over the past 15 years, our hackerspace has witnessed the birth of countless projects—3D printers humming away, locks deftly picked off bridges, lasers meticulously crafted, tools tirelessly employed, and an abundance of Club Mate consumed. And, let’s not forget the unique tradition of knitting electronics and the presence of ducks—lots and lots of ducks.

Join us for a special birthday edition of our Open Social night at our fourth and current space. The festivities promise not only cake but also mouth-watering pizza straight from our oven. Expect the unexpected as we have a few surprises up our sleeves, showcasing the incredible diversity of projects born within our community.

Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, we invite you to explore the wonders of our space in Motor City. We’ll gladly offer a grand tour, ensuring that something intriguing captures your interest. TOG is more than just a hackerspace; it’s a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation.

As we reflect on our journey so far, we invite you to join us in reminiscing about the projects we’ve accomplished and the exciting endeavours we have planned for the next 15 years. Pop in for a quick visit or stay the entire evening, soaking in the atmosphere of passion and collaboration.

Spread the word, bring your friends, and feel free to contribute to the festivities by bringing along beer, food, or your favourite gadgets. TOG is not just an event; it’s an experience, and we want you to be a part of it.

Whether you’re a seasoned maker or someone eager to learn, TOG welcomes you with open arms. Join us on this special night or at our regular free events, and discover the joy of hacking and making with both new and old technologies.

Don’t worry about parking; we’ve got plenty of free spaces available. Come celebrate with us, and let’s make this 15th birthday an unforgettable night of creativity, camaraderie, and shared memories!

Irish Embassy At 37C3

This Christmas saw the return of the Chaos Communications Congress, 37C3. The event returned to Hamburg for the first time back since the pandemic.

A key aspect of the event is Assemblies. Self-organized sessions/areas where hackers come together with a common interest or project. The Irish Embassy is a loose collective of people with some connection to / interest in Ireland, who travel to hacker/maker events and pool resources to create shared spaces while there.

This year’s group was from all over the island with plenty of people from Tog too. They chatted and entrained people who dropped by the assembly and even put on a workshop in the hardware hacking area. You can check out more photos from the event in our gallery.

EMFcamp in June will be the next outing of the Irish Embassy. You can follow their activities on their Mastodon account. https://chaos.social/@irishembassy

Keypad Memory Game

A call went out this festive period on the Irish Makers Unite discord server, looking for interest in participating in a Secret Santa project. Our own Jeffrey Roe decided to take part and this is blog post about his build.

The rules of the project were simple: the gift had to be made by the maker. I received a small blurb about the maker I was creating for. They asked for a desk toy. Due to other commitments, I left myself with only two days for the build, so all the parts would need to be from what I have at home or in the hackerspace.

I have a love of making interactive games for science and maker events, but in the past, they tended to be big things that would no way fit on a desk. I decided to build a memory game using a keypad that has been in my parts bin for over five years —an old matrix keypad that I got free at some long-forgotten event.
