After a hectic day of making and showing off at Dublin Maker, we like to relax with a burger in one hand and an umbrella in the other. So on Sunday 27th of July, we’re hosting a BBQ for makers to eat, chat and start planning next year’s projects.
It’ll kick off in TOG from 2pm, rain or shine.
If you’re a maker, bring your Dublin Maker badge with you and we’ll fill you with grub.
If you’re not a maker, but you want to rub shoulders with us, you’re welcome to join us (and make a small donation to the cost of the food). Just let us know by email or in the comments that you’re popping along.
Introduction to the Julia Language
Julia is a high-level, high-performance dynamic programming language for technical computing, with syntax that is familiar to users of other technical computing environments such as MATLAB.
The workshop will cover the basics of Julia (basic operations, Data objects and control statements) , and only basic coding experience is required for it. Then we will be using it to tackle some numerical computation problems (i.e. Project Euler Questions). As it’s an opensource language, all you need to participate is a laptop with Julia studio installed (or the language and your favourite editor).
The course will be run by Kevin O’Brien who is an experienced R instructor and has run classes with us before on R and ggplot2.
The workshop will take place from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday May 24th. The cost will be €10 for non members, with all proceeds going to supporting TOG.
If you would like to sign up, please complete the form below.

Christmas at TOG: cookies and crochet

As we’re well into December by now, we can talk about the C word all we want! As is tradition by now, the final craftnight of the year will be a sugar-fuelled glitterfest where we try to finish Christmas gifts while raising our blood glucose levels. By the time your insulin sorts that mess out, the crochet class on Saturday 14th will let you return to the scene of the sugarcrime and see what you recall.
Sugar craftnight kicks off from about 6:30pm in TOG on Tuesday December 10th. All are welcome, and all sorts of tasty treats are welcome too! There’ll be hot chocolate to wash down the Christmas cookies, and I’ll have some spare felt and sparkles for anyone who’d rather build decorations than destroy their pancreas (of course you can do both). Coordination of baking will happen through the craft mailing list (anyone can join the list and get regular reminders of craftnights during the year). As with all craftnights, you can just pop down on the night. Our first craftnight of 2014 will be on January 7th.

There will be a crochet bauble workshop run on the afternoon of Saturday December 14th from 2:30pm till about 4:30pm. Participants don’t need any prior experience at crochet, and will still make a pretty netted bauble for the tree. The class will cost €7 including materials (or €2 for members for the materials). Sign-up form for the class after the break.
Crochet for not-quite beginners – Sat 17th August
So you started to crochet, but never quite got further than a square that turned into a triangle? This is the class for you. We’ll look at some further techniques, such as crochet in the round starting with a magic circle and stitches for decreasing. During the class you’ll get a reminder of the basics, and then we’ll make a sphere, which combines increases with decreases and is a great starting point for making hats or amigurumi toys.

Dublin Mini Maker Faire: post-faire BBQ
Making and showing off can be such hard work, that’s why Tog are helping out the makers of Dublin Mini Maker Faire by hosting a wind down barbeque on the day after. Last year’s BBQ was a great success, and with more makers at this year’s faire, it can only be better!
The BBQ will be hosted in Tog on Sunday the 28th of July from 2pm. Weather permitting we’ll be sitting in the yard, enjoying the smell of burning coals, otherwise we can huddle indoors and enjoy ourselves. Food will be provided, but you’ll have to bring your own beer (this way you can pick your favourite beer!). Makers who were involved in the Faire will get free-in with their badges. If you’re not a Maker, don’t fret, you can still join us for the reasonable sum of €5.
If you’re not a member, it’d be great if you can RSVP in the comments or by email, so we can plan for you. We don’t want anyone to be left short of food!
Plenty of food for those who come, let us know in comments below.
