The Need for Speed

Speed Increase
Fast internet has always been important at TOG. Our internet speed has been upgraded from 8Mb to 20Mb, now also allowing for truly unlimited downloads.

As part of the changes we also changed landline number. If the space is open, before dropping in during the day, the landline can be used to check if it’s going to close shortly. Our new number is 076-6035359 or you can call us for free via a SIP phone device sip:togtogtog@87.198.25.1:60773 or blueface ext: 39367

International Space Apps Challenge

On the 21st to 22nd of April, TOG will host the Dublin base for the International Space Apps Challenge.

The International Space Apps Challenge is a two day event that will be taking place all over the world and off world (on the International Space Station). The event is aimed at solving global problems through collaboration both at the local and international level.

There are four main categories of challenges: software, open hardware, citizen science, and data visualisation. You can collaborate on one of the listed challenges or you can propose your own challenge for people to collaborate on.

You can register to take part in the event at http://spaceappschallenge.org/location/tog. TOG will be open for the duration of the event, and if you have any questions, please post a comment.

Note: This a free two day (or overnight) event. Please only register if you can attend both days as the number of places are limited. You can also register if you can only make one day or part of the day.

The plan is to start at 12:00 (noon) on Saturday. We are collecting useful information about our activities here

June Social, Projects Night and Summer Fund

The beginning of June represents the one year anniversary of TOG moving into Chancery Lane or TOG 2.0. To celebrate we’ll be having a dinner party during the June 4th social night.

So what do you want from a TOG dinner party? Ordinary three course meal; formal four course meal; party food; experimental cooking; BBQ; bring-your-own?

We’ve a reasonably equipped kitchen and BBQ. We expect to meet up in TOG about 2pm for the clean up, shopping, preparation, cooking/baking, with dinner starting about 6-7pm. If you like to attend, cook or bring something comment below. We’ll probably have a small contribution to cover the food costs. BYOB.

Following on from the March event we’ll also be having Projects Night on Saturday. Participants will have a short opportunity to present projects they have worked since the last meeting and any new projects they hope to work on over the next three months. We expect this meeting to run from about 8pm to 9pm.

Somewhat related to the Projects Night we are announcing our Summer Fund. Over the three summer months this fund will provide approximately €120 per month for a group project(s). The exact criteria hasn’t been set yet. But it will likely involves a lump sum being give to a project to buy parts/materials for a project which involves/stimulates group activity in the space. Project suggestions and participation from non-members is welcomed.

Dublin 27C3 Peace Mission

We’ll be hosting a Dublin 27C3 Peace Mission for those unable to make it to the 27C3 conference in Berlin during the 27th to 30th of December.

The space will be open to visitors from 11.30 am until mindnight as per the conference schedule:
http://events.ccc.de/congress/2010/Fahrplan/

We will be streaming video from the conference in Berlin 27th to 30th of December. Also the workshop and common areas will be open to visitors who want to work on projects or socialise like during the hackathons. There is full kitchen facilities so bring food if you like.

MiLK: Made in Limerick, get new website

MiLK labs
The number of thriving hackerspaces in Ireland continues to grow, and we couldn’t be happier! The most recent development on this front comes from our friends in MiLK (an awesome name derived from Made in LimericK), who have a new shiny website, and are now meeting twice a month (every 2nd and 4th Tuesday). They currently meet in the Absolute Hotel while they find a suitable physical space to call their own. We wish you all the best of luck and look forward to hearing great things from you in the near future!
