Everything TOG in August, craft, code, lock picking, CAD, book club, free events in Dublin!

Hello all,

Craft Night: Runs on Wednesdays, the 8th and the 22nd August at 7pm. Knitting? Crochet? Embroidery? Laser cutting? 3D printing? Join us and work on something you know, or learn something you don’t.

We are supporting the great Dublin Raspberry Pi Jam crew to put on their first jam. It will be hosted in the Science Gallery on Saturday August 11th from 12:30. You can join the waiting list on the main event page -> https://ti.to/dublin-raspberry-pi-jam/first-pi-jam

Electronics and Micro Controller Night: Runs on Mondays, the 13th and 27th of August at 7pm. Arduinos, Raspberry Pis and Intel Galileos are just some of the things you can work on down here, or try our introductions to electronics worksheet. Recommended you bring your own laptop.

The Science Fiction Book Club gets ambitious this month, we’ve chosen two Philip K. Dick novels: A Scanner Darkly from 1977, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the inspiration for the 1982 classic filmBladerunner. The meeting to talk about them is the last Wednesday of the month, 29th August.

Lock-Picking: Runs on Monday 20th of August at 7pm. Come down and try your hand at cracking open tumbler, tubular or warded locks.

Open Social: Runs on Saturday the 18th of August at 7pm. Join us for an evening of conversations, games and our glorious hand made wood fired pizza.

Coding: Runs on Monday 20th of August at 7pm. Come down and work on a project or help others with theirs. Laptop and project of your own recommended.

Wikipedia Editing: Runs on Wednesday the 29th of August at 7pm. Ever wondered how to get started editing Wikipedia? Come along and will get you adding to the world’s largest open collaborative knowledge project. All are welcome, no editing experience is necessary and the event is free, just turn up with a laptop to start editing.

If you happen to visit EMF Camp from the 31st of August, be sure to drop by the Irish Embassy.

Remember, TOG is run by members, if you want to get involved and help run events + get full access to the workshop and facilities, talk to any member about joining.

August Book Club

Our Sci Fi book club is back. To kick things off we read Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke for the month of July. It divided option on the night with it’s view of technology and the ending. For the month of August we are reading a double feature by Philip K. Dick, with A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? . Our book club is open to anyone to come along be it eye or ear readers. We will be meeting on Wednesday 25th of August from 7pm. We hope to see you there.

Book Club on Hiatus

Thanks to those who made it to book club last Friday. It was especially lovely to catch up with some old members over from Germany! But of late attendance has been low as people are away or busy working away on projects. So, for now, there will be no more book club meetups. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of books out there for you to read. You’ll be fine.

February 2015 Book Club

Thank you to all who came to the February book club meeting. (I still can’t believe no-one else enjoyed the book as much as I did!) The next meeting is set for 19:30 Friday 20th March. (Hopefully we’ll enjoy the next book more.)

This month’s book is “The Martian” by Andy Weir;

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first men to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first man to die there.

And the short story this month is “Progress Report” by Alex Apostolides and Mark Clifton, and is available on Gutenberg.

January 2015 Book Club

Thank you for attending this months book club meeting. The next meeting is set for 19:30 Friday 20th February. As we were all so pleased with the short story “The Machine Stops” by E.M. Forster we’ve decided to try it again this month.

The book this month is “Player Piano” by Kurt Vonnegut;

Kurt Vonnegut’s first novel spins the chilling tale of engineer Paul Proteus, who must find a way to live in a world dominated by a supercomputer and run completely by machines.

And the short story this month is “The Damned Thing” by Ambrose Bierce, which is public domain and available on Gutenberg.

December 2014 Book Club

Yes! Friday, 12th December, at 19:30, we’ll meet for the last time this year. We’ll reminisce about our favourite books of the year gone by, and discuss this months book; chosen by random number generator – Gateway by Frederik Pohl.

Gateway opened on all the wealth of the Universe…and on reaches of unimaginable horror. When prospector Robinette Broadhead went out to Gateway on the Heechee spacecraft, he decided he would know which was the right mission to make him his fortune.
