TOG will be hosting Ubuntu-ie as they hold a bug jam to coincide with global jam. The Ubuntu Global Jam (UGJ) is a a world-wide online and face-to-face event to get people together and work on

• Bugs – finding, triaging and fixing bugs.
• Testing – testing the new release and reporting your feedback.
• Upgrade – upgrading to Maverick from Lucid and reporting your upgrade experience.
• Documentation – writing documentation about how to use Ubuntu and how to join the community.
• Translations – translating Ubuntu and helping to make it available in everyone’s local language.
• Packaging – work on Ubuntu packages and improve them.

We want to get as many people online and in person fixing bugs, having a great time doing so. This is not only a great opportunity to really help Ubuntu, but to also get together with other Ubuntu enthusiasts and work on things as a group and help one another.

We will be hosting the event on the 28th of August opening at 10am until late.

The Joys of 3D Printing

We will be talking about everything 3d printing, 3d scanners molding, design and general things 3d. Will be demoing the makerbot and what we have built with it so far. Showing off designs for some improvements and upcoming projects.
Update The talk will also include a section on CNC Routers/Milling machines.

A brief beginners look at conductive thread, conductive fabric, soft switches, and an introduction to sensors and wearable micro controllers for making your soft circuits that bit smarter. We’ll take a look at some existing applications, and then there’s a hands-on session where you’ll make your own soft circuit.

The community are enjoying the new challanges that lock companies like to throw at them. Their new “secure” locks. A discussion about a number of everyday locks, that you use on a day to day basis, and how lockpickers can get around them.

An Evening of Amateur Radio

Amateur Radio is a hobby of constructing, experimenting and communicating. A licensed radio experimenter can operate two-way radio equipment from  almost anywhere, and can talk across town or around the world. Ireland is a hive for Amateur Radio enthusiasts , with over 35 clubs around the country. The scope and possibilities are endless with Radio, for example, experiments with home-built equipment or antennas, sending TV pictures, operating through satellites, or just having a quiet chat with friends at home or abroad. This evening is a chance for the public to get an introduction to Amateur Radio and to see how it all works.

Fun with Pattern Matching – Or how to build a database using flat files

Flat-file databases have many uses in applications which use small amounts of data and/or no RDBMS is available. For example, a small program on a system for user logins or access control where less than, say, 100 data entries will be in use over the lifetime of the system. The best known
example is the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/group files on a unix system.

We will also cover the use of pattern matching for converting http://…. queries to useful command line parameters.This presentation will introduce the user to the Black Arts of manipulating formatted text files using unix command-line utilities such as cut, paste, grep, sed and awk. No previous Unix experience is required and any commands used will be explained before use.

Its a quiz to test you 1337 hacker skills. Get you friends and make teams of 3 to battle it out. Rounds will include hacker history , know your ports . The quiz will be happening synchronous with our friends in 091labs . Ticket price/ donation to be confirmed.

10th Global Synchronous Hackathon

Warm up your soldering irons, thread your needles and fill the fridge with your beverage of choice. The 10th Synchronous Hackathon takes
place. The hackatohns are a great chance for people to do larger projects. The space is alive with a buzz for the hackathons.

The course will begin on August 23rd and will run for 5 weeks every Monday from 7.00pm to 9.30pm. The cost will be €30 for non-members, and free for members.

Please note that this is a course for complete beginners. We are thinking of doing a Python crash course later on, for people already familiar with another programming language.

The move into the new premises is going along well, and we are planing
to start the next PHP course for Beginners on Wednesday, the 7th of
July.

We would like to arrange a get together before: 7:00pm on 5th of July at Tog
so we would have time to get to know you, show you around and arrange the payment.

The course will run for 5 weeks always on Wednesdays, 7:00pm to 9:30pm
(if 7pm is so early for somebody please let me know, in this case we
would start at 7:30pm and end at 10pm)

The course will cost 50euro this time, for 2 reasons:
1. the feedback from the last course was, that 30euro is to cheap
2. now that we have moved to a bigger space, we have more to offer but
also more costs
