Security Series: Security Shepherd CTF

On Wednesday the 14th of March from 19:30 – 22:00, we are going to demo Security Shepherd to the public.

Security Shepherd is a 4th year project created by DIT Student Mark Denihan. The purpose of this application is to educate people about Web Application Security. It involves a series of levels that each user works their way through. Each level has information about the type of attack that a user reads before attempting the attack. Previously DIT students have had a chance to work through the levels, I think it would be a great evening to see how many levels we can get through. I have played it myself and it is a good challenge.

Required for this night is :
Your own laptop, Firefox, Java 6 JRE, BurpSuite (free version).

Attendees of all levels should attend. Mark and myself will be on-hand to give extra tip’s and explanations if required.

I will also be running a Wireless Security Workshop where I will set up wireless networks to be attacked and go through the process of doing so as well as explaining the reasons why the attack works.

Secure yourself online

The Internet has become the way in which we naturally communicate in our daily lives. Accessing the Internet in work, on the move and at home is becoming the norm and most people don’t realize the many ways that we are becoming vulnerable with each click of a mouse.
We will be going through the common mistakes made when protecting personal data from outsiders, and showing some safety measures that anyone can take to protect their data online.

There will be a presentation on the topic followed by discussion.
No experience needed.

Social Nights Moved

So we have decided to move our social nights to more regular intervals and easier to put in our calenders, both paper and electronic!

So from now on we have our social nights on the 1st Saturday of the month, and the 3rd Thursday of the month (just before the Hackathon). This means that our first Social Night in the new slot is Saturday the 7th August and the next will be Thursday the 19th of August. I have also added these new dates to our calender on the blog so you can also check there if you are unsure.

The suggested themes for these nights will be a food night where people can bring food to the space and share some nibbles and a laugh, and a movie night ( the first one was great 🙂 ). These can of course change as more suggestions are made.

Lockpicking Group

Talking in the space there are a few people interested in lock picking, a few of us having owned a lock pick set for some time would like to get into the art of picking locks (again?) so what better way to do it than organise a group night in TOG.

Lock Picks

We will meet on Tuesday the 20th July 2010 from 7pm to 10pm and I’m going to be bold now and call it a bi-weekly event. Bring your locks, padlocks and your kits to the space. If you do not own a set it can be best to come to a night like this and check out the different types of kits available and ask around where is the best place to get locks and kits before you go and buy some yourself. There are normally a few picks to go around.

Non-members give me a shout to let me know your coming to the night.

Any questions, let me know. (form below)

RFID Group

There has been some interest within TOG and also from visitors about regarding a technology that is pushing its way into our lives more and more each month. From transport ticketing systems, access control in workplaces and even in our very own passports, all contains a contactless smart card technology known as RFID.

OpenPCD and OpenPICC

So to start off I want to try get people interested together and see if we can arrange a regular meeting playing with RFID devices, exchanging knowledge and maybe collaborating on some projects. We will meet this Thursday, 15th July 2010, from 7pm to 10pm (to get our buses home). If we have a enough people together and a need to , we will try to start a bi-weekly meet-up. This is not a workshop, we are meeting to discuss the technology. A workshop might me considered in the future if there is a need for it.

Please bring your readers, writers and RFID cards that you would like to show. Some of the known devices within the group include OpenPCD, OpenPICC, Proxmark, TouchaTag (previously TikiTag) and OmniKey readers. If you have any more please bring them along with you. Any non members attending please send me a message so we can expect you. (contact form below)

Hope to see you there

Jester
